Why Do Breakouts Keep Coming Back?

There are two key factors we focus on when treating acne, and both are about what's blocking your pores.

Your skin's top layer contains natural exfoliating enzymes that help shed old skin cells. These enzymes only work properly when your skin has enough essential fatty acids and hydration.

When your skin is chronically dehydrated or your barrier is impaired, those enzymes can't do their job. Dead skin cells build up and get trapped in your pores.

The answer isn't more exfoliation, because exfoliating doesn't hydrate your skin. The focus should be on restoring hydration and your barrier, from the inside out.

1. Retention Hyperkeratosis (Dead Skin Blocking Your Pores)

Do you get oily in your T-zone but nowhere else? Or does your skin feel normal in the morning but oily by the afternoon? This often points to an imbalance in the consistency of your sebum (oil).

When your skin lacks essential fatty acids, sebum can become thick and sticky, clogging your pores.

When pores are blocked by both oil and dead skin, oxygen is cut off, creating the perfect environment for acne-causing bacteria to thrive.

2. Thick, Sticky Sebum

As your skin therapists, our goal is to:
  • Decongest blocked pores

Each 45-minute treatment is tailored to your skin and can include:
  • Sircuit Skincare peels: enzyme, retinol or mandelic acid peels to decongest blocked pores and trapped skin cells
  • Extractions to clear congestion
  • Oxygenating mask to help reduce acne-causing bacteria
  • Red and blue LED light therapy to calm inflammation and support healing

Our acne facials have minimal downtime. Some mild dryness, flaking or peeling for 3–5 days afterwards is normal and part of your skin's renewal process.

What to Expect After Your Acne Treatment

To make sure your treatment is safe and effective:
  • Avoid photosensitising medication for 5 days before your appointment, as we won't be able to use LED therapy
  • Please don't come in sunburnt
  • Avoid other skin treatments for 2 weeks beforehand, including injectables, facials, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion and skin needling

What's the best treatment for acne on the Gold Coast?

How many acne treatments will I need?

Yes. Our treatments are suitable for breakouts, blackheads, whiteheads, congestion and cystic acne. Suitability is assessed at your consultation.

Do you treat cystic acne?

Downtime is minimal. You may notice mild dryness or flaking for 3–5 days.

Is there downtime after an acne facial?

Recurring acne is often driven by dehydration, barrier impairment and thick, sticky sebum, along with internal factors. Treating only the surface won't stop breakouts returning, which is why we look at the root cause.
