Dermapen microneedling is one of our most-used treatments at The Facial Bar in Mermaid Beach, and for good reason. As the Gold Coast's acne specialists, we use Dermapen not only for acne scarring, pigmentation and skin rejuvenation, but also with a specialised protocol for skin with active acne.

What Is Dermapen Microneedling?

Dermapen is an advanced microneedling device that creates thousands of tiny micro-channels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries trigger your skin's natural healing response, stimulating collagen and elastin production and supporting healthier skin renewal.

Unlike older rolling devices, Dermapen needles vertically with precise, adjustable depth, so treatment can be tailored to each area of your face and to your specific skin concern.

Microneedling for Active Acne

Many clinics avoid microneedling over active breakouts. At The Facial Bar, we work with Dermapen, and they have an approved acne protocol that allows us to treat skin with active acne.

Needling over active acne helps oxygenate breakouts, supporting the skin to heal. Just as importantly, treating acne early helps minimise the risk of long-term skin damage, including acne scarring.

This protocol is part of our root-cause approach. We treat what you can see while working to understand why your skin is breaking out, so you're not just waiting for acne to clear and dealing with scarring later.

Boost Your Results with MG Glides & Infusions

Your Dermapen treatment takes around 10 minutes. We cleanse and prepare your skin, then treat each area at a depth suited to your concern. You'll feel a light vibrating or scratching sensation, and most clients find it very comfortable.

We also finish with a skin soothing and repairing sheet mask from the Dermapen range and an indulgent scalp massage to melt away any stress.

Downtime After Microneedling

Most clients see the best results from a course of treatments spaced [4–6] weeks apart. Your therapist will build a plan around your skin concern and goals.

How Many Dermapen Treatments Will I Need?

Dermapen microneedling starts from $299, with MG glides and infusions available as an add-on.

  • Avoid [retinol/active skincare] for 3-5 days beforehand
  • Discontinue Omegas and blood thinners 5 days prior 
  • Please don't come in sunburnt
  • Avoid other skin treatments for 2 weeks prior, including injectables, peels and dermaplaning

Many clinics won't, but at The Facial Bar we use a specialised Dermapen protocol designed for skin with active acne. Suitability is assessed at your consultation.

Can you microneedle over active acne?

Yes. Microneedling stimulates collagen, which can improve the appearance of acne scarring and uneven texture over a course of treatments.

Does Dermapen microneedling help acne scarring?

Most clients describe it as a light scratching or vibrating sensation. Depth is adjusted to your skin and comfort. You may arrive to your appointment with numbing cream prior. We recommend buying Nummit or emla from any good chemist and apply liberally from each corner of your face, under eyes, top lip, nose, eyebrows and everywhere we needle. If you choose to do this, please apply numbing cream 15-20 mins prior to arrival for optimal comfort.

Does microneedling hurt?

Microneedling, especially when combined with a targeted infusion, can help fade the appearance of pigmentation and even out skin tone.

Is microneedling good for pigmentation & PIE?

Dermapen needles vertically with adjustable depth, giving more precise, controlled treatment than a roller, which drags across the skin.

What's the difference between Dermapen and a skin roller?
